By 1st Assistant Chief David Dowd
February 3, 2019

On January 21st, the Irvington Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to a call for smoke in the residence on Cayuga Lane off of Taxter Road. Upon arrival 2nd Assistant Chief Dan Billings did what we call a 360 of the building. A 360 is a quick evaluation of the scene to see what we as firefighters are facing. Upon conducting the evaluation, Chief Billings identified a fire coming from the side of the building and immediately upgraded the assignment to a working structure fire which brought multiple mutual aid departments to help. Shortly after that, Chief Billings upgraded the assignment to a second alarm due to the fire load as well as the frigid temperatures.

Members braved extremely cold temperatures (in the single digits) to fight the fire and nobody suffered any injuries. We would like to remind everyone that if you come in contact with a fire in your residence, please close the door to the fire room, evacuate the building and dial 911 immediately. The home owners in this instance closed the door to the fire room which contained the fire to one room. Great thinking by the home owners!

Thank you to our mutual aid departments that assisted us; Ardsley, Dobbs Ferry, Elmsford, Hastings, Pleasantville (rehab unit), Millwood (cascade unit) and Tarrytown. In addition, we would like to send a special thank you to the members of the Greenburg Department of Public Works (DPW) who came quickly to spread salt on the roads due to severe ice conditions.

Mutual Aid: Ardsley, Dobbs Ferry, Elmsford, Hastings, Pleasantville (rehab unit), Millwood (cascade unit) and Tarrytown
